Thankful for Education

2016-11-23T16:24:33+00:00 November 23rd, 2016|Mission Trips, Partners, sponsors, Volunteers|0 Comments

A reflection from a recent mission trip. Sitting on a bench with sweat dripping down my back and mosquitoes attacking my ankles, I feel no discomfort while listening to the sounds of 200 children at recess. It brings great joy. The opportunity for education is so often undervalued in our comfortable lives in the United States. In the US we have lost the appreciation of the gift of  knowledge in our schools. The futures LOVE Takes Root are impacting with education, is humbling. It is not unnoticed on these children and the Haitian people. They have a deep respect for [...]

Ahead of the Curve

http://on.wsj.com/2ef3X4B This article that was recently printed in the Wall Street Journal and reinforces the value system of LOVE Takes Root Board and organization. From the beginning of the La Concorde Haiti project, LOVE Takes Root has had a business plan and an exit strategy. We have no in-country director. Rather we mentor our Haitian partners to have a full understanding of what it takes to be independent and sustainable. Self-sustainability has been our unified mission.  This is not necessarily the easiest way to provide aid and support to the developing world.   But with strong communication and trust, projects [...]

Hurricane Matthew Update

2016-10-07T11:03:08+00:00 October 7th, 2016|Mission Trips, sponsors, Uncategorized|0 Comments

Hurricane Matthew swept through Haiti Oct 4th with rain continuing through out the week. Jacmel was just east of the eye of this hurricane but sustained high winds and a lot of rain! The children and staff at La Concorde remain safe. They all stayed together in the dining hall through the worst of the storm. None of the buildings at La Concorde were damaged and for that we are very thankful. The recovery after is very difficult. There is minimal infrastructure and everyone was already in a survival mode prior to the storm.  At La Concorde we are in [...]

LOVE Takes Root just returned from a wonderful week of sports and medicine!  We had eight high school students, two college students, parents, a dermatologist, orthopedic surgeon, nurses and two basketball back boards! The Parks and Norris families had a sports bag for each child. It contained a shirt for camp, different colors for different groups, a pair of tennis shoes, underwear, socks, water bottle and a volleyball! Every morning they worked on a different sport. They loved American Football and Basketball. The Wolfe family was also present: Grandmother, Daughter and 2 grandchildren. They were celebrating the lives of their [...]

Inspiration for the Future

2016-05-24T08:51:56+00:00 May 24th, 2016|Partners, sponsors, Volunteers|0 Comments

Last week some board members of  LOVE Takes Root went to the Okoboji Middle School to hear a presentation and accept a donation from two groups of 5th grade students. They had an assigned  project that needed action. Both groups choose to help other children who did not have as many opportunities as they did. The one group chose to collect shoes.  La Concorde has been in need of shoes and this is not a one time need. They learned about the shoes by connecting with LTR and learning what the needs were. Then they got organized and collected gently [...]

Arlene was a woman before her time, and those who knew her were privileged. She always presented herself with colorful clothes, big earrings and nails done. She an extraordinary mother to two sons and a wife that enjoyed and embraced her marriage. She worked with her husband running a drug store using her savvy business skills to guide them. When LOVE Takes Root started, at the age of 84 [...]

Heeding Haiti’s Call

2016-10-19T12:53:54+00:00 April 13th, 2016|Mission Trips, Partners, sponsors, Volunteers|0 Comments

This was first published in DMU Alumni Magazine April 6, 2016.  Heeding Haiti’s call April 6, 2016 — Barb Boose A WARM AND WONDERFUL PLACE: Rick Wilkerson, D.O.80, and his wife, Barbara, rallied resources and like-minded supporters to move an orphanage from Port-au-Prince to a new facility near Haiti’s southern coast. Rick Wilkerson, D.O.’80, didn’t need Haiti to fulfill his passion for overseas medicine. After all, he’s provided health care and medical training regularly since 1991 in nations ranging from Afghanistan to Vietnam as well as the United States. But when a planned trip to Afghanistan was canceled in 2010, [...]
