Thinking about a Service Trip?

2018-10-03T15:00:05+00:00October 3rd, 2018|Mission Trips, Volunteers|

This is from a member of the August Service/Mission team.  I love the picliz too! My name is Julia Bobinet, I am a Junior at the University of Iowa studying nursing.  I was raised in the small town of Osage, Iowa.  I was given the opportunity to travel to Haiti with Love Takes Root in August.  This was my first time participating in an international service trip!  At first. I was a little nervous because I had never met my team members, let alone traveled outside of the country without my family.  When we arrived in Haiti our team gathered [...]

Volunteer Spotlight: Ted Skidmore

2018-04-18T13:50:09+00:00April 18th, 2018|Mission Trips, sponsors, Volunteers|

Ted Skidmore began his involvement with LOVE Takes Root as a donor, but his passion for and commitment to the work of LTR grew following his first trip to Haiti. After a 27 year career in marketing, including 21 years at The Walt Disney Company, Ted decided to take a break from corporate entertainment and spent a week visiting La Concorde in Jacmel, Haiti as a LOVE Takes Root volunteer. His trip to Haiti was an experience that inspired Ted to focus on improving the lives of others, and after identifying the need for better quality and quantity nutrition for [...]

Entrusting Education,  Entrusting Administration,  Entrusting Self Sufficiency               “ Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.”  Desmond Tutu        Entrusting Education  La Concorde has 240 children enrolled in the Primary and Secondary schools. This year the 8th grade class was begun. It has been difficult to find teachers at the secondary level. The vision is to have power, computers and internet that will help with this secondary level of learning during the next school year. A half wall preschool building was constructed this year to help with the large enrollment [...]

Thankful for Education

2016-11-23T16:24:33+00:00November 23rd, 2016|Mission Trips, Partners, sponsors, Volunteers|

A reflection from a recent mission trip. Sitting on a bench with sweat dripping down my back and mosquitoes attacking my ankles, I feel no discomfort while listening to the sounds of 200 children at recess. It brings great joy. The opportunity for education is so often undervalued in our comfortable lives in the United States. In the US we have lost the appreciation of the gift of  knowledge in our schools. The futures LOVE Takes Root are impacting with education, is humbling. It is not unnoticed on these children and the Haitian people. They have a deep respect for [...]

2016-10-19T12:53:54+00:00August 4th, 2016|Mission Trips, sponsors, Volunteers|

LOVE Takes Root just returned from a wonderful week of sports and medicine!  We had eight high school students, two college students, parents, a dermatologist, orthopedic surgeon, nurses and two basketball back boards! The Parks and Norris families had a sports bag for each child. It contained a shirt for camp, different colors for different groups, a pair of tennis shoes, underwear, socks, water bottle and a volleyball! Every morning they worked on a different sport. They loved American Football and Basketball. The Wolfe family was also present: Grandmother, Daughter and 2 grandchildren. They were celebrating the lives of their [...]

Inspiration for the Future

Last week some board members of  LOVE Takes Root went to the Okoboji Middle School to hear a presentation and accept a donation from two groups of 5th grade students. They had an assigned  project that needed action. Both groups choose to help other children who did not have as many opportunities as they did. The one group chose to collect shoes.  La Concorde has been in need of shoes and this is not a one time need. They learned about the shoes by connecting with LTR and learning what the needs were. Then they got organized and collected gently [...]

Heeding Haiti’s Call

This was first published in DMU Alumni Magazine April 6, 2016.  Heeding Haiti’s call April 6, 2016 — Barb Boose A WARM AND WONDERFUL PLACE: Rick Wilkerson, D.O.80, and his wife, Barbara, rallied resources and like-minded supporters to move an orphanage from Port-au-Prince to a new facility near Haiti’s southern coast. Rick Wilkerson, D.O.’80, didn’t need Haiti to fulfill his passion for overseas medicine. After all, he’s provided health care and medical training regularly since 1991 in nations ranging from Afghanistan to Vietnam as well as the United States. But when a planned trip to Afghanistan was canceled in 2010, [...]

Excited to introduce our newest activity at LOVE Takes Root. The Roots Runners. LOVE Takes Root (LTR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating the future of children worldwide.  We help children around the world facing dire circumstances by delivering basic aid, education and the seeds for a sustainable future.  In 2011, we were called to Haiti where we have relocated and rebuilt an orphanage reduced to rubble by the 2010 earthquake.  For sustainability, we have also built a primary school, medical/dental clinic, and are presently building a secondary school. LOVE Takes Root is an Iowa-based volunteer-led grassroots organization that [...]
